Safety coordinator

Ardel Steel has established a solid reputation in the fabrication, distribution and installation of reinforcing steel and related products in Saskatchewan.  We are seeking a motivated individual to administer our successful Safety Program. We are COR Certified by the SCSA and have recently passed our second external audit.  There is opportunity for this position to be part-time or seasonal, if full-time, the right candidate will have the ability to be flexible and fill in for other positions as needed.  Travel between Regina and Saskatoon and to construction sites will be required.

Role:
The Safety Coordinator is responsible for promoting a safe and healthy workplace for all employees, contractors, customers and visitors.  The Safety Coordinator determines strategic direction of the safety program and implements plans based on safety audit results, provides support and is a trusted advisor to the management team in Regina and Saskatoon.

1.   Responsibilities 

  • Continued Improvement of Safety Program
  • Update all instructional documents relating to safety – as needed
  • Update all forms related to safety  - as needed
  • Research, plan, organize and conduct training programs/seminars for Ardel Steel employees, with regard to WHMIS, Fall Protection, New Hire Orientations, Supervisor Orientations, Crane Operator, First Aid etc.       

2.   Program Enforcement

  • Ensure proper training requirements are met for trade certifications
  • Schedule safety training and coordinate with supervisors and employees
  • Follow up on accident and injury reports, issue corrective or disciplinary action as required
  • Manage all injury and WCB claims and modified duty program
  • Respond to employee concerns regarding safety
  • Communicate safety requirements, and organize training with the union and sub-contractors

3.   Company Compliance        

  • Represent Ardel Steel as the HSE main point of contact for clients
  • Submit all documents for client requested information
  • Submit all construction safety prequalifications, mitigation plans and HSE acknowledgements to the client
  • Ensure company adherence to COR standards, allowing Ardel Steel to remain in good standing
  • Represent Ardel Steel during safety audits from outside sources (OH&S, COR etc)
  • Maintain ISNet account and grades, provide safety stats and quarterly reporting
  • Maintain MyComply and in-house training records

Qualifications

  • Education or designation in Health and Safety (such as National Construction Safety Officer)
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of OHS Legislation
  • Experience with Certificate of Recognition (COR) program
  • 2 – 3 years’ experience working in a safety  position
  • Preference given to those with experience in the construction, manufacturing, or steel fabrication industry
  • Combination of experience and education will be considered
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel and Word in particular)
  • Have a Class 5 Driver’s license and vehicle
